Uganda's Largest National Park
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park — 3,893 km² of open savannah, riverine woodland, and tropical forest in the northwest, bisected by the Victoria Nile. The park’s centrepiece is Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile forces through a 7-metre gorge before dropping 45 metres into the devil’s cauldron below. Game drives, the Victoria Nile boat safari, and chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest make it one of Uganda’s most complete wildlife destinations.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s most diverse single-park destination — combining open savannah game drives, the Victoria Nile boat safari, and chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest in a single visit. It is the only Uganda park where all three major activity types are available without moving to another park.
The falls and the Nile are the defining experience. The Victoria Nile enters the park from the east and forces through a 7-metre rock fissure at Murchison Falls — the most powerful waterfall in Africa — before flowing northwest through the park to Lake Albert. The boat safari from Paraa Jetty to the base of the falls is the park’s most popular single activity: three hours upstream on a river lined with hippo pods, Nile crocodiles among the largest remaining in Africa, elephant bathing at the banks, giraffe visible along the wooded margins, and the red-throated bee-eater nesting in cliff colonies along the gorge walls.
The game drive wildlife is strong. Four of the Big Five are present — lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard. Rhino are not found in the park but can be tracked on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the drive north from Kampala. The park holds one of Uganda’s largest populations of Rothschild’s giraffe (400+ individuals) — the most reliable site in the country. Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbuck, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, and Bohor reedbuck are consistently seen on the northern savannah circuits.
Budongo Forest adds a primate dimension. The 825 km² Budongo Forest in the park’s southern section holds approximately 800 chimpanzees — one of the largest populations in Uganda. Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo (permit: $120 pp) is available alongside the main Murchison game drive and boat safari activities.
450+ bird species are recorded — the shoebill is possible on the Nile Delta boat cruise and in the papyrus wetlands; the red-throated bee-eater nesting colony on the Victoria Nile gorge walls is one of the most accessible in East Africa; and 56 raptor species have been recorded, including bataleur eagle, tawny eagle, and pygmy falcon.
Murchison Falls is open and rewarding year-round. The dry seasons give the most consistent game viewing and the most comfortable conditions on the northern savannah tracks.
The two dry seasons — December to February and June to September — are the best overall windows. Wildlife concentrates around the Victoria Nile and permanent water sources, vegetation is lower for clearer sightlines, and the boat safari produces its most dramatic wildlife encounters as animals come to the water in the heat of the day.
The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush landscapes, excellent birding, and lower accommodation rates. Some roads in the northern sector can become challenging after heavy rain. The boat safari operates year-round regardless of season.
Main dry season and Uganda’s peak safari window. Excellent game drives on the northern Buligi and Victoria circuits — lion, giraffe, and elephant sightings are at their most reliable. The Victoria Nile boat safari is spectacular with large animal concentrations at the water’s edge. Shoebill sightings on the Nile Delta cruise are more likely in dry conditions. Best photography window with clear skies and golden light.
Short dry season. Good conditions throughout with dry tracks and consistent wildlife sightings. Rothschild’s giraffe are reliably seen in large groups. The chimpanzee trekking in Budongo is productive. This window sees moderate visitor numbers — lower than the June–September peak — making it an excellent value option.
Wet seasons. Lush green landscapes and strong birding as migratory species arrive. Some northern sector tracks can become muddy after heavy rain. The boat safari operates normally. Accommodation rates are lowest. Visitor numbers are fewest — a good option for solitude-seeking travellers comfortable with occasional rain.
Getting here: Murchison Falls is approximately 305 km from Kampala — 5–6 hours by road via Luwero, Nakasongola, and Masindi. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is on this route and is included in most northern Uganda itineraries as a stop on the way. Charter and scheduled flights from Entebbe to Pakuba Airstrip or Chobe Airstrip within the park significantly reduce travel time. Most travellers visiting Murchison on a Uganda circuit fly in from Entebbe and drive out, or the reverse.

Health and practical: Standard Uganda health precautions apply — anti-malarial prophylaxis recommended; yellow fever vaccination required. Uganda e-visas at visas.immigration.go.ug. Murchison is significantly hotter than Uganda’s western parks — carry ample water. The Victoria Nile ferry at Paraa connects the northern and southern sectors; a small crossing fee applies. A 4×4 is essential for the northern sector tracks, particularly in wet conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Victoria Nile boat safari and a morning game drive on the northern savannah. The boat safari (departing from Paraa Jetty at 09:00 or 14:00, approximately 3 hours) is the park’s most iconic experience — approaching Murchison Falls from the water with hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephant, and giraffe on the banks. The morning game drive on the Buligi and Victoria circuits is Uganda’s best open-savannah game drive, with Rothschild’s giraffe, lion, buffalo, and elephant all consistently seen. Done together, these two activities cover the park’s defining wildlife and landscape.
The shoebill is present in the Nile Delta papyrus wetlands and is possible on the Nile Delta Cruise (up to 5 hours, $40 pp). It is more reliably found in the dry season when water levels are lower and papyrus concentrations are accessible. The Nile Delta Cruise specifically targets the delta area where the Victoria Nile flows into Lake Albert — the most productive Murchison shoebill habitat. For guaranteed shoebill sightings, Mabamba Wetland near Entebbe is the most reliable Uganda site and is typically included as a Day 1 activity on Uganda itineraries.
Yes — Budongo Forest in the park’s southern section holds approximately 800 chimpanzees and offers habituated chimpanzee trekking ($120 per person, groups limited to 6). Treks depart at 07:00 and last 2–4 hours plus one hour with the chimps. The full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience ($230 per person) is also available. Budongo chimpanzee trekking pairs naturally with the park’s northern game drives and boat safari, making Murchison one of very few Uganda parks where both savannah game viewing and primate trekking are available without changing location.
From Entebbe/Kampala: approximately 305 km, 5–6 hours by road. Charter and scheduled flights to Pakuba or Chobe Airstrip reduce this to approximately 1 hour. From Bwindi or the western Uganda circuit: approximately 400–450 km, 8–10 hours by road via Masindi and Fort Portal — a long single drive. Most itineraries combining Murchison with Bwindi use a domestic flight between the two parks rather than the overland.
The Victoria Nile Cruise ($30 pp, 2–3 hours) goes upstream from Paraa Jetty to the base of Murchison Falls — the most popular option, combining large mammal sightings with the dramatic close-range view of the falls at the journey’s end. The Nile Delta Cruise ($40 pp, up to 5 hours) goes downstream from Paraa into the Nile Delta where the river flows into Lake Albert — a slower, more birding-focused cruise targeting the shoebill and waterbirds in the papyrus delta. For a first visit, the Victoria Nile Cruise is the priority; the Nile Delta Cruise is ideal for birders or those with a second day at the park.
Yes — and it is included in most Murchison itineraries as a standard stop. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is on the main Kampala–Murchison road and holds Uganda’s only wild southern white rhino population, tracked on foot by armed rangers. A 1–2 hour rhino tracking walk at Ziwa naturally breaks the long drive north from Kampala and adds Uganda’s only rhino encounter. The 12-Day Explore Uganda Pearl of Africa Safari includes both Ziwa and Murchison as standard stops.
