Overview

This 15-day itinerary is one of the most geographically ambitious Uganda safaris available — covering the established southwestern circuit (Lake Mburo, Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, Murchison Falls) and extending into the remote northeast to include Kidepo Valley National Park, a destination that appears on very few Uganda itineraries but arguably delivers the most dramatic and authentic savannah safari experience the country offers.

The southwestern circuit follows the established south-to-north routing, with Bwindi’s gorilla trek as the emotional anchor. The Bwindi forest walk on Day 6 crosses the Ishasha sector en route to Queen Elizabeth, giving the park’s tree-climbing lions alongside the transition. Kibale adds the chimpanzee encounter before the drive north to Murchison Falls for game drives and the Victoria Nile boat safari. The final chapter — Kidepo Valley — is where this itinerary departs most decisively from standard Uganda circuits. Kidepo sits in the remote Karamoja region near the South Sudan border, over 500 km from Kampala. Its wildlife includes cheetah, wild dog, Burchell’s zebra, the Rothschild’s giraffe in extraordinary density, and a predator population that operates in a genuinely uncrowded, unfenced wilderness. The Karamojong nomadic cattle herders are among the most culturally distinct communities in Uganda, and a guided cultural encounter here is unlike anything available in the more visited parts of the country.

It suits experienced Uganda travellers wanting to add Kidepo to a familiar circuit, first-timers with sufficient time who want the complete picture, and adventure travellers specifically drawn to Uganda’s remote north.

Kidepo is the reason experienced Uganda travellers come back. It's completely different from the southwest — remote, wild, and culturally extraordinary. Adding it to the standard circuit turns a good Uganda trip into an exceptional one.

Highlights

  • Shoebill tracking at Mabamba Wetland, Entebbe
  • Lake Mburo National Park — zebra, impala, and acacia birding

  • Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha sector, Queen Elizabeth NP
  • Kazinga Channel boat safari — Africa’s highest hippo density

  • Victoria Nile boat safari to the base of Murchison Falls
  • Game drives at Murchison — Rothschild’s giraffe, lion, elephant
  • Kidepo Valley National Park — cheetah, wild dog, Burchell’s zebra
  • Karamojong cultural encounter — nomadic pastoral culture of northeast Uganda

General Information

Uganda’s six national parks on this itinerary span three distinct ecosystems. The southwest (Lake Mburo, Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth’s Ishasha sector) encompasses the montane forest, savannah, and Albertine Rift transition zone. The central-west (Queen Elizabeth’s main sector and Kibale) covers the forest-savannah mosaic and equatorial rainforest. The north (Murchison Falls and Kidepo) represents the open Nile savannah and the remote semi-arid Karamoja highlands.

Kidepo Valley National Park is the least visited of Uganda’s major parks and, for many visitors, the most dramatic. Its remote northeastern location — the park is accessible by a full day’s drive from Kampala or by domestic flight — ensures that visitor numbers remain very low. The wildlife is diverse and relatively unfazed by vehicles; the scenery of the Narus and Namamukweny valleys, framed by the Didinga Hills on the South Sudan border, is unlike anything in the western parks. The park is one of the few places in Uganda where cheetah, wild dog, and caracal are reliably reported.

The Karamojong are a Nilotic semi-nomadic pastoral people who have maintained their cattle herding traditions across one of the most remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa. A guided cultural encounter in a Karamojong manyatta (kraal) on Day 14 provides a cultural dimension with no equivalent elsewhere in Uganda.

Detailed

Itinerary

This 15-day itinerary runs south-to-north from Entebbe through the standard southwestern circuit, then pivots northeast to Kidepo for the final three days. The transition from Murchison Falls to Kidepo on Day 12 is the itinerary’s logistical challenge — the overland distance is approximately 250 km on roads that are rough in the north and significantly improve travel times with a domestic flight (available from Pakuba Airstrip at Murchison or directly from Entebbe to Kidepo). A domestic flight between Murchison and Kidepo is strongly recommended and should be discussed and costed at booking.

The gorilla trek on Day 5 is the itinerary’s emotional centrepiece. Kidepo on Days 13–14 is its geographical and experiential counterpoint.

What Our Travellers Say

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

Kwa Alaska

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
