Rwanda's Capital City
Kigali
Kigali is Rwanda’s capital and the starting point for every Rwanda safari. Clean, safe, and genuinely engaging — with the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a strong restaurant scene, and contemporary art spaces — it rewards more than a transit stop. Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking is 2–3 hours northwest. Every Rwanda safari begins and ends here.
Kigali is one of Africa’s most orderly and genuinely engaging capitals — clean streets, good food, and a cultural energy that surprises most first-time visitors. It sits at 1,500m, keeping temperatures comfortable year-round.
The Genocide Memorial is essential. The Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is built over mass burial grounds where over 250,000 victims are interred. It provides the essential context for understanding modern Rwanda. Allow 2–3 hours and visit early in your trip.
The city is worth exploring. Key stops include:
- Inema Art Centre and Niyo Gallery — strong contemporary Rwandan art
- Kimironko Market — the city’s largest, vivid and local
- Caplaki Craft Village — handmade baskets, jewellery, and textiles
- Heaven Restaurant — gourmet cooking with hilltop city views
- Repub Lounge — a reliable city staple for over a decade
It’s the safari gateway for all of Rwanda. Distances are short:
- Volcanoes NP (gorilla trekking): 2–3 hrs northwest
- Nyungwe Forest (chimps, canopy walk): 4–5 hrs south
- Akagera NP (Big Five): 2–3 hrs east
- Bwindi, Uganda (gorillas, $800 permit): ~5 hrs via Kyanika border
Kigali suits first-time Rwanda visitors, travellers with a layover day, and anyone wanting to arrive in the country oriented rather than immediately in transit.
Kigali’s 1,500m altitude keeps temperatures stable year-round — typically 15°C to 27°C. The question is rainfall, which affects road conditions to the parks more than the city itself.
Rwanda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons. The dry seasons offer the clearest skies and easiest travel. The wet seasons bring lower prices and better gorilla permit availability, with the trade-off of afternoon downpours and occasionally slower roads to Nyungwe.
Seasonal Accordion Items:
June–September Rwanda’s main dry season and peak travel window. Clear skies and dry roads across all destinations. Gorilla permits at Volcanoes NP sell out earliest for this period — book 3–6 months ahead. Kigali is at its most active. Best window for photography across Rwanda.
December–February The short dry season. Generally clear and warm with brief afternoon showers possible. Good permit availability compared to the June–September peak. Popular for year-end travel. Accommodation rates are competitive with advance planning.
March–May The long rains. Regular afternoon downpours; roads to Nyungwe can slow. Best gorilla permit availability. Accommodation rates lowest. The landscape is intensely green. A good option for value-focused travellers with flexible dates.
Getting here: Kigali International Airport (KGL) is 10 km from the city centre. Direct flights connect from Europe, the Middle East, and across Africa. RwandAir is the national carrier.
Getting around: Uber, Yego Cabs, and Move ride-hailing apps are the most practical options. Moto-taxis are cheap but not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the city. Your Nkuringo Safaris guide handles all transfers on booked itineraries.
Visa: Most nationalities receive a tourist visa on arrival or can apply in advance at migration.gov.rw. East African Community nationals have separate arrangements. Confirm current fees before travel.
Health: Malaria risk in Kigali is lower than in lowland areas but present. Anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended. Yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your travel history. King Faisal Hospital is the primary medical facility for visitors.
Money: Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the official currency. USD is widely accepted at hotels and lodges. ATMs are available throughout the city. Visa is more broadly accepted than Mastercard. Mid-range hotel rooms from approximately USD 80–150/night.
Practical: Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda — do not bring them into the country. English is widely spoken across Kigali’s service industry.
