10-Day Classic Rwanda Primates Safari
Overview
This 10-day Rwanda itinerary is the most complete single-country circuit in the Nkuringo Safaris Rwanda portfolio — covering every major destination from Kigali in the centre to Nyungwe in the southwest, Lake Kivu in the west, and Volcanoes National Park in the northwest, with cultural and historical stops woven throughout the journey.
The structure is a clockwise loop from Kigali. Three nights at Nyungwe give proper time for both the chimpanzee trek and the canopy walk without rushing. Two nights at Lake Kivu — at Kibuye (Karongi) on the lake’s eastern shore — provide the mid-trip rest that a 10-day active safari needs, with the added dimension of a boat safari on the lake and an optional day excursion to Goma across the DRC border. Three nights at Volcanoes National Park then cover the gorilla trek, the Ellen DeGeneres Campus, and a rest day before the return to Kigali on Day 10.
The cultural dimension of this itinerary is stronger than any other Rwanda safari in the portfolio. Day 2 includes stops at the traditional royal palace at Nyanza and the Ethnographic Museum in Butare (Huye) en route to Nyungwe. Day 7 visits Rosamond Carr’s Imbabazi Orphanage at Mugongo — a historically significant stop connected to one of the most vivid firsthand accounts of Rwanda’s recent history. The Kigali Genocide Memorial frames both the arrival on Day 1 and the departure on Day 10.
It suits Rwanda-focused travellers wanting the full country, travellers combining Rwanda with Uganda or Tanzania, and anyone for whom the cultural and historical story of Rwanda is as important as the primate encounters.

General Information
Rwanda’s compact geography — roughly the size of Wales — makes a 10-day circuit genuinely comprehensive rather than superficial. The three destinations on this itinerary represent three distinct ecological zones: Nyungwe Forest is ancient montane rainforest on the Congo-Nile watershed, Africa’s most biodiverse highland forest; Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s western Rift Valley lake, 90 km long and shared with the DRC; and Volcanoes National Park is volcanic mountain forest at altitude, the world’s only remaining mountain gorilla habitat shared between Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC.
The cultural stops along the route are not incidental. The traditional royal palace at Nyanza was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy until 1961; the Ethnographic Museum in Butare is the finest museum of Rwandan material culture in the country. Rosamond Carr’s Imbabazi Orphanage at Mugongo is associated with her memoir Land of a Thousand Hills — one of the most widely read firsthand accounts of Rwanda before, during, and after the genocide. All are worth allocating proper time.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 10-day itinerary moves efficiently — no wasted day is a simple transfer. Day 2 turns the Kigali–Nyungwe drive into a cultural day with meaningful stops. Day 5 turns the Nyungwe–Lake Kivu drive into a scenic transition. Day 7 turns the Kibuye–Ruhengeri drive into a historical stop at the Imbabazi Orphanage. Only Day 10 is a straightforward return, and it includes a final Kigali stop.
The three-night allocation at both Nyungwe and Volcanoes is correct — rushing either would undersell the experience. The two Lake Kivu nights are generous but justified: the boat safari on Day 6 is a substantive activity, and the rest the lake provides between the two forest chapters is practically valuable.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
The itinerary is rated physical. The gorilla trek (Day 8) is the most demanding element — variable duration on volcanic terrain at altitude, typically two to five hours. The chimpanzee trek (Day 3) is similar in effort. The canopy walk (Day 4) requires no special fitness. The boat safari (Day 6) and all cultural stops are passive. The Imbabazi Orphanage and Ellen DeGeneres Campus visits involve easy walking only. Moderate fitness is sufficient for the trek days; altitude awareness at Nyungwe (up to 2,950m) and Volcanoes (up to 4,500m in some sectors) is worth noting.
Yes — one gorilla trekking permit ($1,500) and one chimpanzee trekking permit ($90) per person are included in the USD 5,919 pp price. Both are Rwanda Development Board permits. Confirm current rates at booking.
The Imbabazi Orphanage was founded in 1994 by Rosamond Halsey Carr — an American who had lived in Rwanda since 1949 — to care for children orphaned during the genocide. Mrs. Carr died in 2006; the orphanage continues under local management. It is not a staged tourist experience but a working institution with a genuine and moving historical connection. The visit is respectful and worth doing; the broader context of Mrs. Carr’s life in Rwanda, told in her book, is recommended reading before the trip.
Goma is the DRC city immediately across the border from Rubavu (Gisenyi) at Lake Kivu’s northern end. The town was partially destroyed by the eruption of Nyiragongo volcano in 2002 and is visible from the Rwandan side of the border on clear days. A day-visit crossing is possible for travellers wanting to see the lava flows and experience the DRC urban landscape. DRC day visas and border fees apply and are not included in the trip price. The excursion is optional and entirely at the traveller’s preference — discuss with the team at booking.
Two nights gives a proper rest between the two forest chapters and allows the Day 6 boat safari as a substantive activity rather than a rushed stop. One night at Kibuye would mean arriving late, leaving early, and missing the lake entirely as an experience. The rest Lake Kivu provides is practically valuable in a 10-day trip that includes two demanding trek days. The Day 6 boat safari — with the DRC mountains and fishing communities on the water — is one of Rwanda’s most distinct and underrated experiences.
Yes. Akagera National Park in the east can be added at the start (two to three nights, Big Five game drives) for travellers wanting the full Rwanda sweep — forest, lake, volcanic mountains, and savannah. The itinerary can also be combined with Uganda gorilla trekking via the Kyanika border crossing after Day 7 for a Uganda–Rwanda two-country trip.
