16-Day Safari to Uganda’s Top National Parks
Overview
This 16-day itinerary is a premium Uganda safari package designed for travellers who want the country’s five most visited national parks delivered at a comfortable, unhurried pace — with each destination receiving enough time to be experienced properly rather than simply checked. It starts north and works south, and the routing avoids backtracking throughout.
The trip opens in Entebbe with the shoebill at Mabamba before the drive north to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — one of Uganda’s most underrated stops and the only place in the country to encounter wild white rhinos on foot. Murchison Falls follows for three nights covering game drives on the northern tracks and the Victoria Nile boat safari. From Murchison, the route drops south to Kibale for chimpanzee trekking and the Bigodi Wetland walk, then to Queen Elizabeth for the Kazinga Channel and the Kasenyi game drives, with a dedicated two-night stop at Ishasha for the tree-climbing lions. The Bwindi chapter is the itinerary’s centrepiece — three nights, with the cross-forest walking trail from Ishasha to Nkuringo on Day 11, a free day on Day 12 for optional activities, and the gorilla trek on Day 13. The trip closes at Lake Mburo with the horseback safari and a cultural stop at the Igongo Cultural Centre on the return drive.
At USD 14,800 pp, this sits at the upper mid-range to luxury tier — the lodge selection includes Kyambura Gorge Lodge at Queen Elizabeth and Mihingo Lodge at Lake Mburo.

General Information
Uganda’s five top national parks on this itinerary cover the full range of the country’s wildlife ecosystems. Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park — 3,840 km² of open Nile savannah with the Victoria Nile at its centre. Kibale is the equatorial rainforest lowland equivalent, holding East Africa’s highest density of chimpanzees alongside 13 primate species. Queen Elizabeth’s 1,900 km² mosaic of savannah, crater lakes, and riverine forest connects via the Kazinga Channel to the highest hippo density in Africa. Bwindi is ancient montane forest — UNESCO listed, 25,000 years old, and home to half the world’s mountain gorillas. Lake Mburo is the smallest of the five, but the only park with zebra and impala and the only one offering horseback safaris.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — not a national park but a UWA-managed sanctuary — fills the white rhino gap in Uganda’s wildlife offer. The on-foot rhino tracking experience here, covering Uganda’s only wild white rhino population, is one of the most memorable activities on the circuit.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 16-day itinerary moves north-to-south from Entebbe — the direction that keeps the routing logical and avoids backtracking. Murchison receives three nights (the minimum to do the park properly — game drives north and south, plus the boat safari). Kibale is one full activity day. Queen Elizabeth gets four nights across two sectors (Kyambura main and Ishasha). Bwindi receives three nights for the forest walk, free day, and gorilla trek. Lake Mburo closes the trip with two nights for the horseback safari and the Igongo cultural stop on the return to Entebbe.
The Day 11 forest walk (Ishasha area drive to Buhoma, then cross-forest trail to Nkuringo) is the most logistically complex day — it involves an early start, a drive to Buhoma, and a four to five hour forest walk to the Nkuringo sector. The driver meets walkers at the Nkuringo exit. Confirm the logistics for this day with the guide at booking.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
The itinerary is rated physical. The gorilla trek (Day 13) and chimpanzee trek (Day 6) are variable-duration walks in dense forest. The cross-forest trail (Day 11) is four to five hours on forest trails with elevation change. The horseback safari (Day 15) requires basic riding confidence. All game drives, the Kazinga Channel and Nile boat safaris, and the Ziwa rhino walk are moderate to passive. Good general fitness is needed for consecutive active days.
The Igongo Cultural Centre on the Mbarara-Masaka road is a museum and cultural complex dedicated to the history of the western Uganda kingdoms — primarily the Ankole, Kigezi, and Banyarwanda communities. It houses ethnographic collections, royal artefacts, and exhibits on the pastoral culture of western Uganda, alongside a restaurant. It is one of the more substantive roadside cultural stops in the country and sits naturally on the Bwindi-to-Lake Mburo drive.
Both are good-quality lodges on granite kopje outcrops overlooking the park. Mihingo Lodge is positioned as a luxury property with swimming pool, spa, and horse riding as a featured activity — it is the more premium of the two. Rwakobo Rock is a comfortable mid-range option. This itinerary specifies Mihingo Lodge consistent with the USD 14,800 pp price point; confirm the lodge preference at booking.
The walk can be replaced with a standard road transfer from Ishasha to Nkuringo (two to three hours) for travellers who prefer not to do the full trail. The cross-forest walk is a highlight of this itinerary and is strongly recommended for fit travellers. Discuss at booking based on your fitness and preferences.
Yes — the Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500 per person, Rushaga sector, four hours with a semi-habituated family) can replace the standard gorilla trek on Day 13 with advance planning. It requires a separate sector arrangement from Nkuringo. Discuss at the planning stage.
Yes. The most efficient shortening removes either the Ziwa/Murchison chapter (saving Days 2–4 and starting directly at Kibale) or the two-night Ishasha stay (condensing to a single Ishasha game drive en route to Bwindi). The team can requote the adjusted version. For a comprehensive 11-day version, the 11-Day Uganda Highlights Safari is the reference itinerary.
