Buhoma Lodge is one of only two lodges set inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park itself, positioned just above the Buhoma visitor centre — the starting point for gorilla treks in the northern sector.
The Buhoma sector is home to five habituated mountain gorilla families, making this one of the most reliable bases for gorilla trekking in Uganda. The lodge is built entirely from eco-friendly materials sourced from the forest and surrounding communities, runs on green energy, and is designed to blend into rather than impose on the canopy.
Wake to forest birds and monkey calls — and very occasionally, to gorillas in the lodge gardens.
Best for: Mid-range to luxury travellers, honeymooners, and families wanting a premium, in-park base for gorilla trekking, with the trade-off of forest immersion over open views.
Accommodation at Buhoma Lodge
The lodge has ten cottages, each with a private veranda and large windows opening onto the forest canopy.
Standard chalets include:
- A wide, comfortable bed
- En-suite bathroom with hot and cold water (some with bathtub)
- Insect-proof window screens
- Eco-friendly solar lighting
- In-room safe and complimentary toiletries
Family / Honeymoon Chalet A larger chalet with a separate lounge room and an open fireplace, suitable for honeymooners or families wanting a shared space alongside the bedroom.
The open-air lounge and bar at the heart of the lodge looks straight out over the forest, often wrapped in mist. Meals are multi-course, prepared with fresh local produce.
Amenities at a glance:
- 24-hour electricity
- En-suite bathrooms (some with bathtub)
- Private deck or veranda
- Forest canopy views
- In-room safe
- Solar lighting
- Laundry service
- Babysitting available
Families and Children
The Uganda Wildlife Authority does not permit children under 15 to trek mountain gorillas. Buhoma Lodge offers a babysitter and on-site activities so children can stay safely entertained while parents trek. The Family/Honeymoon Chalet is the most practical room for families with its separate lounge.
Activities in the Buhoma Sector
The Buhoma sector is one of the richest bases in Bwindi for combining gorilla trekking with community and nature experiences.
Buhoma Community Village Walk A guided walk through the village with the option to visit Bwindi Community Hospital and contribute to its work supporting the local population.
Ride 4 a Women A local women’s empowerment project offering sewing, weaving, and skills training for women facing HIV, domestic violence, and poverty. Visitors can drop in and support the centre directly.
Batwa Cultural Experience A full-day experience run by the Batwa Development Program, exploring the historical lifestyle of the Batwa community, including hunting and gathering traditions from their time as forest dwellers.
Guided Nature Hikes and the Waterfall Trail The Uganda Wildlife Authority runs guided forest hikes. The 3–4 hour waterfall hike is the most popular. Wildlife on the trails includes monkeys, forest hogs, elephants, and over 23 endemic Albertine Rift bird species.
Longer Walking Safaris For deeper exploration of the forest, Nkuringo Walking Safaris leads multi-day treks across Bwindi via historic trails such as the Kasashari River and Ivy Trails.

For travellers prioritising forest immersion at a mid-luxury level, Buhoma Lodge is the strongest choice.
