9-Day Luxury Gorilla Safari in Uganda

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your driver transfers you to Hotel Number 5 — a boutique luxury property in Entebbe with a notably different feel from the standard airport-adjacent hotels. The afternoon offers the optional shoebill tracking canoe trip at Mabamba Wetland on Lake Victoria — Uganda’s most reliable shoebill habitat, 45 minutes from the hotel.

An early departure from Entebbe for the five to six-hour drive west to Kibale Forest National Park. The route passes through Uganda’s central savannah and into the Rwenzori foothills as it approaches the park. Ndali Lodge sits above a chain of crater lakes west of Kibale — the arrival, with the lakes below and the Rwenzori range behind, is one of the most striking lodge arrival moments in Uganda.

The rest of the afternoon is free at the lodge. The optional fly-in alternative — a one-hour domestic flight to Kasese followed by a three-hour transfer — is available for travellers who prefer not to drive.

Briefing at Kanyanchu visitor centre at 7:30 am, then into Kibale Forest with the ranger guide. The habituated chimpanzee community is tracked daily — the hour spent with the group on finding them delivers a primate encounter that’s loud, fast, and behaviorally complex. The chimps’ resemblance to humans — their social bonds, problem-solving, and emotional expressiveness — makes this as affecting an experience in its own way as the gorilla encounter.

The afternoon walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary adds a quieter dimension — a community-managed wetland adjacent to the park with prolific birdlife, five further primate species including red colobus and L’Hoest’s monkey, and an important local conservation story.

Drive south from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park — around three to four hours along the Rwenzori foothills and down into the park’s northern zone. Kyambura Gorge Lodge sits on the park’s edge above the Kyambura Gorge — the steep forested ravine that holds the park’s small habituated chimpanzee community (an optional second chimp trek for dedicated primate enthusiasts).

Arrive in time for an evening game drive across the Kasenyi Plains — lions reliably use the open grassland in the late afternoon light.

A sunrise game drive on the Kasenyi Plains — the park’s most productive wildlife zone for lion, leopard, cheetah, and the antelope breeding grounds that concentrate predators in a reliable area. Elephant, buffalo, and Uganda kob are constant presences.

The afternoon Kazinga Channel boat safari from Mweya Jetty is one of Uganda’s most wildlife-rich two hours — Africa’s highest hippo density on a single waterway, prolific elephant and buffalo on the banks, and exceptional birdlife including the African shoebill, saddle-billed stork, great white pelican, and African skimmer.

Transfer to Kasese Airport for the one-hour domestic flight south to Kisoro — a short scenic hop over the western Rift Valley with views of the Rwenzori range and the Virunga volcanoes on approach. A 1.5-hour drive from Kisoro reaches Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge on Bwindi’s southern boundary — perched on the forest edge with panoramic views across the Kigezi highlands and the Virunga volcanoes.

Arriving fresh rather than road-weary is the main advantage of the flight. The afternoon at the lodge — on the terrace with the forest sounds and the Virunga panorama — is the natural close to the transfer day.

Briefing at 7:30 am at the Nkuringo visitor centre, then into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with your guide and armed rangers. The Nkuringo sector’s terrain is steep and the vegetation dense — the trek’s duration is variable. One permitted hour is spent with the habituated gorilla family on finding them.

The silverback’s physical presence — calm, enormous, and occasionally making direct eye contact — is the experience around which this entire itinerary is built. No amount of preparation entirely anticipates what it feels like to be three metres from a 200 kg wild mountain gorilla in his forest.

The afternoon is free at the lodge. Porters are available for hire on the trek day and are recommended — $20, and a meaningful contribution to the local community.

A morning guided walk on the Buniga Forest cultural trail with Batwa elders. The Batwa people lived inside Bwindi’s forest for thousands of years before conservation-driven relocation — the Buniga trail is a structured knowledge-sharing experience covering traditional hunting and gathering techniques, medicinal plant use, forest navigation, and the cultural relationship between the Batwa and the gorillas and other animals of Bwindi.

It is a more substantive experience than the cultural performance model sometimes offered elsewhere — the elder’s knowledge of the forest is genuine and deep, and the walk itself passes through the forest edge adjacent to the park.

The afternoon is free at the lodge — the last full afternoon in Uganda’s southwest, and worth spending quietly on the terrace watching the forest and the Virunga skyline.

A morning departure from the Nkuringo area for the drive back to Kisoro Airport and the one-hour flight to Entebbe. The return flight passes over the southwestern highlands, the Virunga volcanoes, and Lake Victoria on the approach — the aerial view adds a final geographic perspective on the country just explored.

On arrival in Entebbe, transfer to the international airport or to a partner hotel for any last-day requirements. Day 9 accommodation in Entebbe is not included but can be arranged on request.
