What is Rwanda Gorilla Trekking?

Rwanda gorilla trekking is a guided trek through Volcanoes National Park in search of one of the park’s habituated mountain gorilla families. Once found, you spend one hour observing the group at close range — watching silverbacks, mothers, and juveniles interact in their natural habitat.

Treks typically last between 2 and 6 hours depending on where the gorillas have moved. Trails pass through bamboo forest, open meadows, and volcanic slopes. The experience is led by expert local guides and park rangers throughout.

The Trekking Experience

Morning briefing: The day starts at park headquarters in Kinigi, where guides assign trekking groups and brief visitors on gorilla etiquette and safety rules.

The trek: Groups follow rangers into Volcanoes National Park, navigating terrain that ranges from gentle bamboo slopes to steeper volcanic ridges. Trails can be muddy year-round — sturdy waterproof boots are essential.

The encounter: On finding the gorilla family, you have one hour to observe and photograph them at close range. No flash photography, no sudden movements, and a minimum distance of 7 metres is required at all times.

Physical difficulty: Rwanda gorilla trekking is moderately demanding. Most treks are manageable for travellers with a reasonable level of fitness, though some families are located at higher elevation and involve steeper climbs. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the easiest trekking conditions.

Planning Your Rwanda Gorilla Trek

Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 USD per person — the highest permit price of any gorilla trekking destination. Permits must be booked well in advance, particularly during peak season. Nkuringo Safaris handles permit booking as part of all Rwanda gorilla tour packages.

Getting there: Most Rwanda gorilla trekking tours begin with a flight into Kigali International Airport. From Kigali, Volcanoes National Park is a 2.5–3 hour drive north through Rwanda’s rolling hills. There are no domestic flights required.

Combining destinations: Rwanda pairs well with Uganda for a multi-country gorilla and wildlife safari. A popular option is the Kigali to Bwindi gorilla safari, which combines gorilla trekking in Rwanda with a Uganda safari via a straightforward border crossing.

Rwanda vs Uganda for Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda Uganda
Permit cost $1,500 $800
Travel time from airport 2.5–3 hrs by road 9–10 hrs by road or 1 hr by air
Trekking terrain Well-maintained trails More varied, can be steeper
Safari add-ons Limited in Rwanda Extensive — chimps, game drives, boat safaris
Best for Premium, time-efficient trips Value, diversity, longer itineraries

Both countries offer outstanding gorilla trekking experiences. Rwanda is the better choice for shorter trips, easier logistics, and luxury-focused travellers. Uganda suits those wanting more wildlife variety and greater value for money.

Accommodation

Rwanda gorilla safaris offer some of Africa’s most impressive lodge options, with several properties positioned directly on the boundary of Volcanoes National Park.

Luxury: Bisate Lodge and Kwitonda Lodge offer world-class service, stunning Virunga volcano views, and immersive conservation experiences. Bisate Lodge starts from $1,830 per person; Kwitonda Lodge from $2,245 per person.

Mid-range: Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel in Musanze offers comfortable, well-located accommodation with a focus on personalised service, from $640 per night. Mountain Gorilla View Lodge provides budget-friendly rooms with mountain views, from $240 per person.

We select accommodation based on proximity to the trekking centre, conservation credentials, and value for the level of experience — and tailor recommendations to your budget and travel style.

Activities Beyond Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda gorilla tours can be extended with a range of experiences in and around Volcanoes National Park and across the country.

Golden monkey tracking: Also available in Volcanoes National Park, golden monkey tracking is a shorter and less strenuous alternative or addition to gorilla trekking. Highly recommended for primate enthusiasts.

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund: Visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund near Volcanoes National Park for an insight into mountain gorilla research and conservation.

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe: Nyungwe National Park in southern Rwanda is one of Africa’s best destinations for chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks. Easily added to a longer Rwanda itinerary.

Wildlife safari in Akagera: Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only Big Five safari destination, home to elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras on an open savannah.

Extend to Uganda: For a full East Africa wildlife experience, combine your Rwanda gorilla trek with a Uganda safari — adding chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, or a boat safari at Murchison Falls.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda gorilla trekking is possible year-round. The best conditions are during the two dry seasons.

June–September: The peak dry season. Trails are at their driest and easiest to navigate. Book permits as early as possible — this is the busiest period.

December–February: A shorter dry season with comfortable temperatures and good trekking conditions. Popular with travellers avoiding the northern hemisphere winter.

March–May & October–November (wet seasons): Trails are muddier and trekking is more demanding. However, gorillas are still reliably encountered, permit availability is easier, and some lodges offer reduced rates.

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.
