12-Day Best of Kenya Wildlife Safari
Overview
This 12-day Kenya wildlife safari itinerary takes you through five of the country’s defining landscapes — from the elephant-rich plains of Amboseli beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, to the big-cat country of the Masai Mara. Along the way the route passes through Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Samburu National Reserve, and Lake Nakuru, each adding a distinct chapter to the journey.
The itinerary is built around breadth and variety. Amboseli delivers the iconic Kilimanjaro backdrop with one of Africa’s densest elephant populations. Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya where you can see both the last two northern white rhinos and chimpanzees in the same day. Samburu brings an entirely different ecosystem — semi-arid scrubland along the Ewaso Nyiro River, home to a set of species found almost nowhere else in Kenya. Lake Nakuru adds a flamingo-fringed crater lake and rhino sanctuary. The Masai Mara closes the trip with Africa’s most celebrated wildlife reserve, where lion, leopard, cheetah, and elephant share the plains, and Great Migration crossings occur between July and October.
It’s well-suited to first-time Kenya travellers wanting a thorough introduction to the country’s wildlife, families looking for a varied, manageable route, and couples combining a Kenya safari tour with time in East Africa more broadly.

Kenya's landscapes shift completely from one park to the next — that's what makes this circuit so rewarding. By the time you reach the Mara you've already had experiences most people never get in a lifetime.

General Information on Kenya
Kenya is East Africa’s most established safari destination — a country of dramatically varied landscapes that shift from snow-capped equatorial mountains to semi-arid northern scrubland to open Rift Valley lakes to the sweeping savannah grasslands of the southwest. The country’s national parks and conservancies collectively protect one of the highest concentrations of large wildlife on the continent.
The five destinations on this itinerary span almost the full range of Kenyan ecosystems. Amboseli and the Masai Mara sit in the south, both bordering the Tanzanian ecosystems of Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti respectively. Samburu in the north is culturally and ecologically distinct — the reserve sits in arid Laikipia plateau country and is home to the Samburu, Turkana, and Borana peoples alongside a set of wildlife species uniquely adapted to the semi-arid environment. Lake Nakuru sits in the Great Rift Valley, the tectonic scar that runs the length of East Africa.
Kenya is an accessible country for first-time safari travellers. International flights land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, and the country has a well-developed network of small airstrips allowing fly-in connections between parks. Road transfers between parks are scenic in their own right and practical for most travellers.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 12-day itinerary is structured as a loop from Nairobi, moving south to north and then southwest — a routing that builds momentum through progressively different ecosystems before finishing in the Masai Mara, Kenya’s most iconic wildlife destination.
The pacing is deliberate. Two nights in each major destination allows proper game drive coverage without the itinerary feeling rushed. Longer drives between parks (Ol Pejeta to Samburu, Samburu to Nakuru) are scenic in their own right and include stops along the way. The Great Migration window in the Mara (roughly July to October) is season-dependent — outside that window, year-round lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and buffalo sightings make Days 10–11 among the strongest wildlife days in Africa regardless of timing.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
This itinerary is suitable for all fitness levels. Game drives are vehicle-based throughout, and walking is limited to lodge grounds and optional guided walks. The Ol Pejeta rhino experience involves a short guided walk but nothing strenuous. The longest active element is the Maasai village visit, which involves easy walking on flat ground.
The Masai Mara’s Great Migration crossings run roughly July to October — this is the peak season and the most sought-after window. However, the itinerary works year-round: the Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu all produce excellent game drive results in every month, and the long rains (April–May) and short rains (November) bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds. Amboseli’s Kilimanjaro views are clearest in the dry season (June–October and January–February).
All accommodation is mid-range to luxury tented camps and lodges, full board. Named options include Ol Tukai Lodge (Amboseli), Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta), Ashnil Samburu Camp or Samburu Sopa Lodge (Samburu), Lake Nakuru Lodge (Nakuru), and Ashnil Mara Camp or Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp (Masai Mara). Alternatives at the same tier can be arranged on request.
Land transfers by 4×4 safari vehicle are included throughout. The Day 12 return from the Masai Mara to Nairobi can be upgraded to a charter flight at additional cost — this is worth considering for travellers with tight international departure times. The Nkuringo Safaris team can quote for this at the planning stage.
Yes — this is a tailored itinerary, not a fixed departure. Ol Pejeta or Lake Nakuru can be removed for a shorter circuit, or Rwanda or Uganda gorilla trekking can be added at the start or end for a broader East Africa trip. Contact the team to discuss the options.
Yes. Game drives are well-suited to children of most ages, and the variety of parks — elephants at Amboseli, rhinos at Ol Pejeta, flamingos at Nakuru, the Mara’s big-cat drama — keeps the experience varied and engaging. The Maasai village visit is also a strong cultural element for younger travellers. The Nkuringo Safaris team can advise on the best accommodation options for families at each stop.
