8-Day Classic Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari
Overview
This 8-day itinerary delivers Uganda’s three headline primate encounters — gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, and the Batwa cultural trail — alongside big-game viewing at Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Park, in a logical south-then-west routing from Entebbe. A domestic flight between Kisoro (Bwindi area) and Kasese (Kibale area) replaces what would otherwise be a five-hour overland transfer, keeping the trip moving efficiently without burning a day in a vehicle.
The itinerary is structured in three clear chapters: Lake Mburo on Day 2 as the entry point into the western circuit; Bwindi for two nights covering the gorilla trek on Day 4 and the Batwa trail on Day 3; and the Queen Elizabeth and Kibale segment for the wildlife game drive, Kazinga Channel, and chimpanzee trekking before the return to Entebbe on Day 8.
An optional Bwindi cross-forest walk on Day 5 — available at $155 pp additional cost — adds the 13 km Ivy River Trail as an alternative to the direct drive from Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth. Travellers who want the most immersive forest experience on the circuit will find this worth the extra day.

This is the itinerary most of our first-time Uganda visitors take, and it consistently delivers. The gorillas and the chimps in the same trip is a combination that's hard to match anywhere in Africa, and the Queen Elizabeth game drive adds the big-game safari element so nothing feels missing.

General Information
Uganda’s western safari circuit is the country’s most visited route, connecting four national parks across the Albertine Rift and equatorial forest zone in a logical overland loop. Lake Mburo is the circuit’s first stop — a compact savannah park offering an easy introduction to wildlife before the forest destinations. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest holds half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas; Kibale Forest holds East Africa’s highest density of chimpanzees and 13 primate species total. Queen Elizabeth National Park connects both forest destinations with its 1,900 km² savannah and waterway mosaic.
Together the three primate trekking permits — gorilla ($800), chimpanzee ($250), and the Batwa trail fee paid locally — represent Uganda’s complete great ape experience. No other single country delivers all three on the same circuit.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 8-day itinerary follows a south-then-west arc from Entebbe through the classic Uganda circuit. The routing avoids backtracking: Entebbe to Lake Mburo to Bwindi by road, then a domestic flight from Kisoro (near Bwindi) to Kasese (near Kibale), enabling the circuit to continue north through Queen Elizabeth to Kibale before the return drive to Entebbe.
The two Bwindi nights cover the Batwa cultural trail on Day 3 (arrival afternoon) and the gorilla trek on Day 4. Day 5 offers the optional cross-forest walk to Buhoma — a genuine forest walking experience at $155 pp additional — before the Ishasha sector drive. Days 6 and 7 cover Queen Elizabeth and Kibale respectively, with the return to Entebbe on Day 8.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
The itinerary is rated physical. The gorilla trek (Day 4) involves variable-duration walking on steep, dense Nkuringo forest terrain — typically two to five hours total. The chimpanzee trek (Day 7) is similar in effort in Kibale’s flatter forest. The optional cross-forest walk (Day 5) adds four to five hours on forest trail. Game drives, the Kazinga Channel boat safari, and the Batwa trail are all moderate to passive. Good general walking fitness is required across the active days.
One domestic flight from Kisoro Airport (near Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector) to Kasese Airport (near Kibale Forest) is included in the price. This replaces a five-hour overland drive between the two destinations and keeps the routing efficient. The flight is approximately 45 minutes to one hour.
The Bwindi cross-forest walk is a 13 km guided trail from Nteko Ridge through the primary rainforest to Buhoma in the north, taking four to five hours. At $155 pp additional cost, it is the most immersive forest walking experience on the circuit — the same trail that forms the core of the 6-Day Uganda Gorilla Trek & Walking Safari. It is recommended for fit travellers who want to experience the forest as an environment rather than simply trek through it to find gorillas. Confirm availability at booking.
The circuit encounters multiple primate species across the destinations. Lake Mburo has olive baboon and vervet monkey. Bwindi has black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, and red-tailed monkey in the forest. Kibale holds 13 primate species total, with red colobus, black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, and L’Hoest’s monkey reliably seen on the chimp trail.
The stated price of USD 5,660 pp is based on two people sharing. Larger groups benefit from lower per-person costs as the vehicle and guide are shared across more people. Solo travellers will pay a single supplement. The team can requote for any group size at the planning stage.
The source lists Mirima Lodge as the Day 6–7 accommodation. Mirima Lodge is linked from the source but does not currently appear in the Nkuringo Safaris lodge directory — confirm operating status and current availability with the team at booking. Turaco Treetops Lodge is the confirmed Nkuringo Safaris Kibale partner and a reliable alternative.
