The Kenya chapter opens in Nairobi with the Giraffe Centre before a bush flight into the Mara for four nights of morning and evening game drives, optional hot air balloon safari, guided bush walks, and a Maasai village visit. The Uganda chapter crosses by air from Kisumu to Entebbe, where shoebill tracking at Mabamba Wetland provides a softer arrival before the flight to Kisoro and the Lake Mutanda canoe crossing to Nkuringo. Three nights in Bwindi cover the gorilla trek and the Batwa cultural trail.

General Information

Kenya and Uganda are East Africa’s two most visited safari countries and are complementary rather than competitive — Kenya for its open savannah, Big Five density, and the Great Migration; Uganda for its mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and the more intimate, forest-based wildlife experiences that the savannah countries cannot offer.

The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 km² of open grassland in southwestern Kenya, contiguous with Tanzania’s Serengeti. It is Kenya’s most wildlife-dense reserve year-round, and the northern end of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem through which the Great Migration passes between July and October. Resident lion prides, cheetah families, and leopard make the Mara consistently productive regardless of migration timing.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting approximately half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population across four trekking sectors. The Nkuringo sector — where this itinerary is based — sits on Bwindi’s southern boundary at high altitude, with the Virunga volcanoes visible on clear days and some of the park’s most dramatic terrain.

Itinerary

This 10-day itinerary divides cleanly into two country chapters. Kenya occupies Days 1–6 (one day in Nairobi, four nights in the Mara, transition day through Kisumu); Uganda occupies Days 6–10 (Entebbe arrival and shoebill tracking, flight to Kisoro, three nights in Bwindi). The cross-border flight between Kisumu and Entebbe is the itinerary’s pivot point — a short hop that separates the open savannah world from the closed-canopy forest world ahead.

Four nights in the Mara is the right allocation for a serious game drive visit — enough to cover the main circuits at different times of day, do the optional bush walk, visit a Maasai village, and still have a slow evening or two. Three nights in Bwindi follows the established pattern of the other Nkuringo Bwindi itineraries: arrival day, gorilla trek day, and a free day for the Batwa trail.

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, your guide meets you and transfers you to your Nairobi hotel. The afternoon offers a visit to the Giraffe Centre — a Rothschild’s giraffe conservation project on the edge of the city where the giraffes can be fed at close range from a raised platform. The Giraffe Manor nearby, where resident giraffes appear at the breakfast windows, can also be visited. Both are brief, engaging stops that introduce Kenya’s wildlife conservation approach from the city’s edge.

A bush flight from Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara National Reserve on Day 2, arriving at your tented camp in time for an afternoon game drive. The Mara’s open grassland extends to every horizon — lion, cheetah, elephant, leopard, and buffalo present year-round across the reserve’s main circuits.

Four nights allows thorough coverage: morning and afternoon game drives on all full days, with the timing and routing adjusted by the camp guide team based on current predator movements. Night drives (where permitted by the camp) reveal the reserve’s nocturnal activity after dark.

Between July and October, the Mara River crossings of the Great Migration unfold in the northern Mara — wildebeest and zebra committing to the crossing in surging groups while Nile crocodiles wait below. This is one of the most dramatic annual wildlife events in Africa and the itinerary’s most variable element in terms of timing.

A guided bush walk on one of the full days takes you on foot through the grassland with an armed Maasai ranger — tracking, plant identification, and the experience of the landscape at ground level. A Maasai village visit provides a direct cultural exchange: greeting the village chief, learning about traditional practices, jewellery, and the Maasai’s relationship with the land and its wildlife.

The optional hot air balloon safari at dawn — available at additional cost, strongly recommended — launches at first light for a 45–60 minute flight over the Mara plains and river, finishing with a bush breakfast on landing.

A morning departure from the Mara camp for the bush flight to Kisumu Airport on Lake Victoria’s northeastern shore, followed by a short connecting flight to Entebbe International Airport. This cross-border hop from Kenya into Uganda takes a few hours in total and lands you on the opposite shore of Lake Victoria from where you departed.

On arrival in Entebbe, your Ugandan guide meets you for a canoe trip into Mabamba Wetland — Uganda’s most reliable shoebill habitat, around 45 minutes from the airport on Lake Victoria’s northern shore. The shoebill stork, one of Africa’s most distinctive birds, is reliably found in the papyrus channels here, alongside lesser jacana, African fish eagle, and a range of waterbirds. The transition from the Mara’s open savannah to this enclosed papyrus wetland is an immediate introduction to Uganda’s different ecological register.

An early morning domestic flight from Entebbe to Kisoro — one hour over southwestern Uganda’s terraced highlands, with the Virunga volcanoes visible ahead on approach. On landing, your guide meets you for the community walking safari — a guided route through village paths, homesteads, and cultivated hillside gardens towards Lake Mutanda.

At the lake, traditional dug-out canoes cross to the northern shore — the Virunga chain behind, the Bwindi hills ahead — with around 45 minutes of flat, calm water and the sounds of the lake community crossing alongside. Your driver meets you on the northern shore for the final transfer to Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, perched on the southern forest edge with panoramic views across the Kigezi highlands.

Briefing at 7:30 am at the Nkuringo visitor centre — five minutes from the lodge. Groups of a maximum of eight enter Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with a tracker guide and two armed rangers. Trek duration is variable; one permitted hour is spent with the habituated gorilla family on finding them.

The encounter is the emotional counterpoint to the Mara’s open game drives — enclosed forest, steep terrain, and sudden close-range proximity to a mountain gorilla family. The silverback’s calm presence, the social activity of the group around him, and the stillness of the forest during the hour consistently affect people more deeply than they anticipated. Porter hire ($20) is available at the visitor centre and strongly recommended for Nkuringo’s terrain.

A morning guided walk on the Batwa cultural trail at Buniga Forest — with Batwa elders sharing traditional hunting and gathering techniques, forest plant medicine, fire-making, and the history of a community whose connection to Bwindi spans thousands of years. The trail passes through the forest edge adjacent to the park and includes a re-enacted hunt and traditional dance at the village. It is one of the most substantive Batwa cultural experiences available in the Bwindi area.

The afternoon is free at the lodge — last time on the Nkuringo terrace with the Virunga panorama and the Kigezi highlands stretching below before tomorrow’s departure.

A morning departure from the Nkuringo area for the drive to Kisoro Airport and the one-hour flight back to Entebbe. The flight passes over southwestern Uganda’s terraced highlands, the Virunga volcanoes visible behind, and Lake Victoria on the final approach. On arrival in Entebbe, transfer to the international airport or to a partner hotel for any late departures.

Overnight accommodation on Day 10 is not included but can be arranged on request.
