Chameleon Hill Lodge - Nkuringo Safaris

Chameleon Hill Lodge

Chameleon Hill Lodge is a vibrantly coloured, mid-range lodge perched on a hill above Lake Mutanda in the shadow of the Virunga Mountains. Its boldly painted cottages, lakeside setting, and 360-degree views of three volcanoes make it one of the most distinctive bases for gorilla trekking in southern Bwindi (Rushaga and Nkuringo) and Mgahinga National Park.

Chameleon Hill Lodge sits on a hilltop above Lake Mutanda in southern Uganda, in the shadow of the Virunga Mountains. It’s a mid-range lodge designed around an unusually bold colour palette — every cottage is individually painted and styled — making it one of the most photographed lodges in the region.

The lodge is well-positioned for trekking the gorilla families in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park around 1.5 hours’ drive away.

It’s also one of the few lodges in the area with direct lake access — a private pier on Lake Mutanda for swimming, kayaking, and boat trips to the islands.

Best for: Mid-range travellers, photographers, couples wanting a lakeside retreat, and fitter trekkers using a single base for both southern Bwindi and Mgahinga.

    Accommodation at Chameleon Hill Lodge

The lodge has a series of individually styled cottages spread across the hillside facing Lake Mutanda and the Virungas. Each cottage has its own colour scheme, decor, and private garden.

    Each room includes:

    • An en-suite bathroom with wide shower windows facing the lake and volcanoes
    • Outside sitting area with views of the Virungas and Lake Mutanda’s islands
    • Bold, individually styled colour scheme and African decor
    • 24-hour electricity

Early morning tea or coffee is brought to the room so guests can take in the lake views from their veranda before breakfast or trekking. Three-course meals are served restaurant-style in the communal hall.

The main building features a wooden deck on top of the hill with bird’s-eye views over the lake, plus a fireplace, colourful art, and a cosy lounge with a stylish cement sofa, soft couch, and armchairs.

    Amenities at a glance:

    • 24-hour electricity
    • En-suite bathrooms
    • Private deck or veranda
    • Wi-Fi in main area
    • Room service
    • Laundry service
    • Health spa with massage
    • Private pier on Lake Mutanda

    Activities at Chameleon Hill Lodge

The lodge’s lakeside, multi-park position is its real strength — guests can combine gorilla trekking with hiking, lake activities, and cultural visits without long transfers.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking — Rushaga and Nkuringo Direct access to gorilla families in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of southern Bwindi. The terrain is more challenging than the northern Buhoma sector, suiting fitter trekkers.

Lake Mutanda — Swimming, Kayaking, and Boat Trips Lake Mutanda is calm enough for swimming straight from the lodge’s private pier. Boat cruises and evening kayak trips to the lake’s tiny islands are a highlight, particularly at sunset.

Virunga Volcano Hikes Chameleon Hill is a strong base for climbing the three Ugandan Virunga summits — Mount Muhavura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabinyo (with three peaks). All three start from the Mgahinga side, around 1.5 hours’ drive.

Batwa Cultural Tour A guided cultural visit with the Batwa community — forest people who lived in the Bwindi jungles for centuries before being relocated. The trail covers their traditional way of life and adjustment to settled communities.

Hiking Around Lake Mutanda Walking trails around the lake and on its many small islands offer easy nature hikes — a quieter alternative to the gorilla trekking days. See more on walking safaris around Bwindi.

Health Spa The on-site spa offers body massages — particularly popular after a tough trekking day.

    What Our Travellers Say

Our guide (Darrick) was amazing; he was knowledgeable, very informative, and very flexible too! He also went above and beyond to make sure we experienced the things we were showing interest in. We are truly happy with Nkuringo and recommend it to friends and family.

    Victoria

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

    Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

    Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

    Kwa Alaska

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

    Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

    David Q, UK

Our driver and guide (Frederic) made our stay very pleasant. He had a lot to share and was open to our ideas. We could rely on him at any time.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

    Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
