    Mount Gahinga Lodge

Bwindi Lodge is a luxury safari lodge in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, set across a valley stream from the forest with the Buhoma trailhead within walking distance.

The lodge is operated by Volcanoes Safaris — one of the most established luxury gorilla-tourism operators in the region — with a strong community-trust programme woven through the property. Bar staff are trained through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, which works with disadvantaged local young people, and the lodge actively supports the surrounding community.

Buhoma is home to five habituated mountain gorilla families, and the lodge’s position above the trailhead makes it one of the most convenient luxury bases for trekking from the northern sector.

Best for: Luxury travellers, honeymooners, and conservation-minded guests who want butler service and a refined Bwindi experience without sacrificing community impact.

    Accommodation at Bwindi Lodge

The lodge has nine wood and stone cottages, each named after a gorilla in the Buhoma sector. One is configured as a Deluxe cottage for families or honeymooners.

    Each cottage includes:

    • A warm, comfortable bed with hand-sewn quilts
    • En-suite bathroom with flush toilet, washbasin, and walk-in hot-water rain shower
    • Private veranda overlooking the canopy
    • Eco-friendly solar lighting
    • Insect-proof window screens
    • In-room safe

The decor leans toward shabby chic — patchwork upholstered chairs, recycled-tin vanity units, striped kilims, and hand-sewn quilts.

Each cottage sleeps two adults, with space for a child under five on an extra bed.

The main building houses the lounge and bar, with big glass windows, an open fireplace, and forest views. Meals are tapas-style and inspired by Ugandan dishes — guests can make their own “rolex” wraps and try the lodge’s Gorillini Cocktail.

    Amenities at a glance:

    • Personal butler
    • 24-hour electricity
    • Complimentary massage at Humula Forest Spa
    • Wi-Fi in the main area
    • En-suite bathrooms with rain showers
    • Private deck or veranda
    • In-room safe
    • Premium wine and whisky menu
    • Laundry service

    Activities in the Buhoma Sector

Bwindi Lodge sits at the heart of the most varied activity range in Bwindi, with gorilla trekking, community visits, and forest hikes all within easy reach.

Buhoma Community Village Walk A guided walk through the village with the option to visit Bwindi Community Hospital and contribute to its work supporting the local population.

Ride 4 a Women A local women’s empowerment project offering sewing, weaving, and skills training for women facing HIV, domestic violence, and poverty.

Batwa Cultural Experience A full-day experience run by the Batwa Development Program, exploring the historical hunting and gathering lifestyle of the Batwa people in the forest.

Guided Nature Hikes and the Waterfall Trail The Uganda Wildlife Authority runs guided forest hikes. The 3–4 hour waterfall hike is the most popular. Wildlife along the trails includes monkeys, forest hogs, elephants, and over 23 endemic Albertine Rift bird species.

    What Our Travellers Say

Our guide (Darrick) was amazing; he was knowledgeable, very informative, and very flexible too! He also went above and beyond to make sure we experienced the things we were showing interest in. We are truly happy with Nkuringo and recommend it to friends and family.

    Victoria

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

    Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

    Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

    Kwa Alaska

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

    Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

    David Q, UK

Our driver and guide (Frederic) made our stay very pleasant. He had a lot to share and was open to our ideas. We could rely on him at any time.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

    Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
