9-Day Luxury Gorilla Safari in Uganda - Nkuringo Safaris

9-Day Luxury Gorilla Safari in Uganda

A curated luxury Uganda safari staying exclusively at premium lodges — chimpanzee trekking and the Bigodi Wetlands at Kibale, game drives and the Kazinga Channel boat safari at Queen Elizabeth, mountain gorilla trekking and the Batwa cultural trail at Bwindi — with a domestic flight between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi eliminating the long overland transfer.

Overview

This 9-day luxury Uganda gorilla safari covers the country’s three most celebrated wildlife destinations — Kibale Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — within a tightly planned 9-day structure that minimises overland travel through the use of a domestic flight between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.

The lodge selection is the core of the luxury positioning. Ndali Lodge above Kibale sits on the edge of crater lakes with Rwenzori views and a classic highland character. Kyambura Gorge Lodge positions guests at the forest-savannah edge in QENP — one of the most ecologically and visually arresting settings of any lodge in Uganda. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge delivers panoramic Kigezi highland and Virunga views from private forest-edge suites. Three nights at Bwindi gives time for the gorilla trek and the Batwa cultural trail without rushing.

Activities across the nine days are substantive: the full-day chimpanzee trek and Bigodi Wetland walk at Kibale, a morning Kasenyi game drive and afternoon Kazinga Channel boat safari at QENP, and in Bwindi both the gorilla trek itself and a morning on the Buniga Forest cultural trail with Batwa elders. Shoebill tracking at Mabamba on Day 1 is the optional warm-up.

It suits luxury travellers, couples, and honeymooners wanting Uganda’s flagship wildlife experiences at the top tier of available lodging — without the exhaustion of long overland drives.

Key Information:

  • Duration: 9 days
  • Departure Location: Entebbe International Airport
  • Trip Type: Personalized / Relaxed

The flight from Kasese to Kisoro changes the whole feel of this trip. You arrive at Bwindi fresh rather than exhausted — and three nights means the gorilla trek and the Batwa trail can both happen properly, without rushing either.

Highlights

  • Optional shoebill tracking at Mabamba Wetland, Entebbe
  • Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale — one hour with a habituated community
  • Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk — birds, primates, and community conservation
  • Kasenyi Plains game drive — lion, leopard, elephant, and cheetah
  • Kazinga Channel afternoon boat safari — hippos, pelicans, and shoebill
  • Domestic flight Kasese to Kisoro — eliminates the long Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi overland
  • Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector
  • Batwa cultural trail at Buniga Forest

General Information

Uganda’s luxury safari offer has matured significantly over the past decade. The lodges named on this itinerary — Ndali, Kyambura Gorge, and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge — represent the current upper tier of the country’s non-chain lodge market: owner-operated, architecturally distinctive, and positioned for the setting’s views as much as for comfort.

Kibale Forest is Uganda’s primate heartland — 13 primate species, over 1,500 chimpanzees, and the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary adjacent to the park managed by a local community organisation. Ndali Lodge sits above a series of crater lakes west of the park, with an intimacy and view quality that make it one of Uganda’s most consistently well-reviewed luxury properties.

Queen Elizabeth National Park covers over 1,900 km² from the Rwenzori foothills to the DRC border. Kyambura Gorge Lodge sits on the park’s northern edge above the Kyambura Gorge — a steep forested ravine cut into the savannah, holding a small habituated chimpanzee community alongside the famous Kazinga Channel boat safari and the Kasenyi Plains’ big-cat game drives.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects around half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. The Nkuringo sector, on Bwindi’s southern boundary, offers some of the park’s most dramatic scenery and the most established community-facing cultural experiences, including the Batwa Buniga Forest trail.

Detailed

Itinerary

This 9-day itinerary is structured for quality rather than quantity — three destinations, each given enough time to breathe: two nights at Kibale, two nights at Queen Elizabeth, and three nights at Bwindi. The domestic flight between Kasese and Kisoro (Day 6) replaces what would otherwise be a six to seven hour overland drive and is included in the trip price, making the transition between QENP and Bwindi the cleanest available for this routing.

The three nights at Bwindi are a deliberate choice for a luxury itinerary — one night to arrive and settle, one day for the gorilla trek, and one morning for the Batwa cultural trail, leaving an afternoon free at the lodge before the Day 9 flight. The unhurried pace at each lodge is part of what distinguishes this from the mid-range circuit versions of the same route.

What Our Travellers Say

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

Kwa Alaska

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
