Isunga Lodge
Isunga Lodge is a mid-range, owner-managed property on a hillside south of Fort Portal in western Uganda, positioned at the edge of the Kibale Forest National Park crater lake area. The lodge sits at an elevation that provides long-range views across the rainforest to the Rwenzori Mountains and, on clear days, as far as Lake George and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Eight cottages are spread over the grounds, well spaced to give each guest a sense of seclusion in a natural garden setting.
The lodge is run by owners Gerry and Karen, who are on-site and actively involved in advising guests on activities and travel logistics. Isunga sits firmly in the mid-range tier — the accommodation is simple and functional rather than polished, but the setting, views, and food quality are consistently highlighted by travellers. It is well suited to those prioritising location and character over luxury amenities.
The property is 20 minutes by road from Kanyanchu, the Kibale National Park headquarters and chimpanzee trekking trailhead, making it a workable base for the park’s main activities without being the closest option to the trailhead.
Accommodation at Isunga Lodge
Isunga Lodge has eight self-contained cottages spread over the hillside. All cottages are solar-powered and include:
- En-suite bathroom with hot and cold water
- Mosquito nets
- Outside seating with views of Kibale Forest
One cottage is configured for families, with two bedrooms, an en-suite bathroom, and a sitting room — sleeping up to four guests.
Note: the cottages are distributed across a hillside with uneven terrain. Guests with limited mobility should discuss accessibility requirements with the lodge before booking.
Charging points for cameras and devices are located in the main restaurant building rather than in individual cottages.
Dining
Isunga Lodge operates a communal restaurant and bar in the main building, which has the best panoramic views on the property. The kitchen sources ingredients from local markets and the lodge’s own organic garden, supplying fresh herbs, vegetables, and salads.
Lunch is a two-course meal (main and dessert); light sandwich lunches using fresh homemade bread are also available. Dinner is three courses (starter, main, dessert). Menus for lunch and dinner are communicated to guests in advance and can be adapted for dietary requirements. Local Ugandan dishes are available on request. Meals can be served in the restaurant, on the terrace, or privately in a cottage.
Activities
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park is the primary reason most guests visit Isunga Lodge. Kanyanchu visitor centre — the departure point for chimp treks — is 20 minutes by road from the lodge. Treks depart in the morning and at 14:00, are limited to eight people per group, and typically last 2–3 hours in the forest. The Uganda Wildlife Authority chimpanzee permit costs $250 per person. Booking permits in advance is strongly recommended, particularly in peak season (June–August, December–January).
Additional activities from or near the lodge:
- Crater lake walks — Guided walks around the volcanic crater lakes surrounding the property, with community visits en route. The lodge also offers a shorter walk suitable for guests with limited time or mobility.
- Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — A community-managed wetland to the east of Kibale Forest, walkable from the park edge, with good opportunities to see red colobus, black-and-white colobus, and bird species.
- Sebitoli Forest trails — A network of trails in the northern section of Kibale providing further primate and birdwatching opportunities.
- Birdwatching — Kibale National Park records 325 bird species, including six Albertine Rift endemics: black-capped Apalis, collared Apalis, purple-breasted sunbird, blue-headed sunbird, dusky crimsonwing, and red-faced woodland warbler.
- Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru Caves — Cave system near Fort Portal, approximately 15 km from Kibale Forest, considered one of Uganda’s seven natural wonders.
- Evening campfire and sundowners — The lodge’s elevated position makes it a good spot for watching sunset over the forest and Rwenzori Mountains peaks.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is possible year-round, as chimps are habituated and found consistently. The dry seasons — June to August and December to January — offer easier walking conditions and clearer forest access. The wet seasons (March–May and September–November) bring heavier rain but fewer visitors and can still produce excellent sightings. Permits should be booked well ahead of peak months.
