    Kyaninga Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge is a luxury lodge positioned on the rim of Lake Kyaninga, a volcanic crater lake in the Fort Portal region of western Uganda. The lodge sits between three national parks — Kibale Forest National Park to the south-east, Rwenzori Mountains National Park to the south-west, and Semliki National Park to the west — making it a practical base for the western Uganda safari circuit as well as a destination in its own right.

The property was designed and built by founder Steve Williams, a master carpenter, using over 1,000 hand-carved logs sourced from alien exotic trees. Construction took six years. The nine cottages extend either side of the main lodge building along the crater ridge, connected by raised wooden walkways. The design has been recognised internationally: Kyaninga Lodge was named one of Fodor Travel’s Best Hotels in Africa in 2022.

The lodge is closely associated with the Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC), a non-profit founded by Steve Williams and Fiona Beckerlegge that supports children with disabilities in the Fort Portal region. The on-site craft shop sells high-quality handmade items; proceeds go directly to KCDC.

    Accommodation at Kyaninga Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge has nine spacious cottages, all raised on platforms and facing Lake Kyaninga. Each cottage is reached via the main raised wooden walkway from the lodge building, and is set apart from its neighbours to ensure privacy.

    Room features across all cottages:

    • Choice of twin or double bed with Egyptian cotton linen and feather pillows
    • Private veranda (front and back) overlooking the crater lake and Rwenzori Mountains
    • En-suite bathroom: marble countertop basins on Elgon olive pedestals, claw-footed freestanding bath, glass-walled shower
    • Solar-powered hot water and electrical charging points
    • Mosquito nets
    • Indoor seating area with easy chairs

The main lodge building houses the restaurant, bar, lounge with a double-sided open fireplace, and two raised gallery areas for more private viewing or dining. The restaurant furniture — including Mvule and Elgon olive tables — was made on-site.

    Dining

Kyaninga Lodge operates a full-service restaurant with panoramic views over the lake and mountains. The kitchen draws on a dedicated kitchen garden and local Fort Portal markets for fresh produce. The menu is based on European cuisine adapted with local ingredients, with an extensive wine list. Guests can dine in the main restaurant, in one of the upper gallery spaces, or privately on their cottage veranda on request.

The bar is stocked and serves as a social space, with fireplace seating for cooler evenings. The bar also functions as a craft shop, with handmade items for sale in support of Kyaninga Child Development Centre.

    Activities

Chimpanzee trekking at Kanyanchu, the main trailhead for Kibale National Park, is approximately one hour from the lodge by road. Treks are limited to eight people per group, depart in the morning and at 14:00, and typically last 2–3 hours in the forest. The Uganda Wildlife Authority chimpanzee permit costs $250 per person. Advance booking is essential, particularly in peak season (June–August, December–January).

    On-site and near-lodge activities:

    • Swimming pool — Set on volcanic rock pavers with two wooden deck areas and a direct view of Lake Kyaninga. Steps lead from the pool area to the lakeshore.
    • Lake Kyaninga swimming and kayaking — Lake Kyaninga has been studied and found to be one of Uganda’s cleanest crater lakes, and is considered bilharzia-free. A floating jetty on the lake is accessible from the main driveway. Kayaks are available for guest use.
    • Crater rim walk — A guided trail around the top of the crater lake with shifting views of the lake, mountains, and surrounding countryside. Running and mountain biking routes follow the same terrain.
    • Forest walk from the lodge — A guided forest walk on the shores of the crater lake, where black-and-white colobus and vervet monkeys can be spotted alongside numerous bird species.
    • Grass tennis court and croquet lawn — The lodge has one of very few grass tennis courts in Uganda, alongside a croquet lawn.
    • Birdwatching — Kibale National Park records 325 bird species, including six Albertine Rift endemics: black-capped Apalis, collared Apalis, purple-breasted sunbird, blue-headed sunbird, dusky crimsonwing, and red-faced woodland warbler.
    • Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — A community-managed wetland east of Kibale Forest with additional primate and birdwatching opportunities.
    • Village and cultural walks — Guided walks through local farms, banana plantations, and communities surrounding the lodge.
    • Tea plantation and vanilla farm visits — Accessible from the lodge as guided day excursions.
    • Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru Caves — Located near Fort Portal, approximately 15 km from Kibale Forest; considered one of Uganda’s seven natural wonders.
    • Rwenzori Mountains and Semliki Valley — Both are within range as day excursions or extension legs for guests building a western Uganda circuit.

    Location & Getting There

Kyaninga Lodge is located north of Fort Portal, on the rim of Lake Kyaninga crater. Fort Portal town is approximately 15 minutes by road.

From Entebbe International Airport: The drive is approximately 5–6 hours overland (around 350 km) via Kampala. Cedarberg Travel and Lightfoot Travel note the journey from Kampala to Fort Portal as approximately 3.5 hours. A domestic flight to Kasese airstrip reduces the overland transfer to roughly 60–90 minutes.

The lodge sits between Kibale Forest National Park (approximately 1 hour south-east), Rwenzori Mountains National Park (approximately 1.5 hours south-west), and Semliki National Park (approximately 2 hours west). Queen Elizabeth National Park is approximately 2 hours south, making Kyaninga a natural midpoint on a western Uganda circuit.

    What Our Travellers Say

Our guide (Darrick) was amazing; he was knowledgeable, very informative, and very flexible too! He also went above and beyond to make sure we experienced the things we were showing interest in. We are truly happy with Nkuringo and recommend it to friends and family.

    Victoria

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

    Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

    Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

    Kwa Alaska

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

    Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

    David Q, UK

Our driver and guide (Frederic) made our stay very pleasant. He had a lot to share and was open to our ideas. We could rely on him at any time.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

    Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
