Fort Murchison Lodge is a distinctive, budget-friendly safari lodge on the eastern banks of the Albert Nile, just outside the northern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park. The river flows past the lodge as the Albert Nile here, before becoming the White Nile as it crosses into South Sudan.
The lodge is built in the style of a 19th-century Arab traders’ outpost — earth-coloured walls, a tall central tower, and Swahili-inspired interiors — referencing the explorers who once based here in search of the source of the Nile.
It sits in the former Aswa Lolim Game Reserve, just 6 km from the Tangi gate, giving guests fast access to the park’s northern game tracks (Pakuba, Queen’s, Te’bito, Chobe, Victoria, and Albert tracks). The northern circuit is rich in Rothschild’s giraffe, lion, leopard, buffalo, and elephant.
Best for: Budget travellers, backpackers, self-drivers, and small groups wanting strong northern Murchison Falls access at affordable rates — with the flexibility of upgrading from a tent to a Swahili-styled room.
Accommodation at Fort Murchison
The lodge offers two types of accommodation across two budget tiers.
Swahili-Styled Rooms (×12) Spacious en-suite rooms decorated with African Swahili decor. Each has a reading desk, private balcony with sofa, and en-suite bathroom with solar-heated water. The mid-range option.
Tented Accommodation Budget tents under grass-thatched roofs, each with two single beds, mosquito nets, a bedside table, and a power outlet. Bedding and towels are provided. Bathrooms are shared in a communal ablution block with showers and flushing toilets.
The main building has a restaurant on the ground floor and a rooftop terrace that’s the lodge’s centrepiece — sundowner spot with views over the Albert Nile and the savannah plains.

- En-suite bathrooms (Swahili rooms)
- Restaurant and bar

Dining at Fort Murchison
The 4-course dinner is served in the downstairs restaurant, decorated with colonial-era drawings and explorer photographs that lean into the lodge’s expedition theme.
The chef sources fresh fruit and vegetables — citrus, mango, pawpaw, jackfruit, passion fruit, and avocado — from the lodge’s own gardens, and bakes fresh bread for every meal. The fixed menu can accommodate dietary requirements with notice.
The rooftop terrace is the standout sundowner spot, with full views over the Albert Nile.
Activities at Fort Murchison
The lodge’s position just outside the Tangi gate gives access to the full range of Murchison Falls activities — game drives, river safaris, chimpanzee trekking, and rhino tracking.
Game Drive Safaris The northern game tracks are reached directly from the lodge, with the richest wildlife concentrated in the Buligi area between the Victoria Nile and Lake Albert. Expect Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard.
Motorboat Safari to the Base of the Falls A 3-hour return boat trip up the Victoria Nile to the foot of Murchison Falls, with hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, giraffe, and elephant along the banks.
Motorboat Safari to the Nile Delta A 3-hour boat trip downstream along the Victoria Nile to the Lake Albert delta — the best chance to spot the elusive shoebill stork and papyrus-endemic birdlife.
Chimpanzee Tracking — Kaniyo Pabidi Forest The nearby Kaniyo Pabidi Forest is home to over 800 chimpanzees, with around 90 across six habituated troops. Other primates include black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, and olive baboons.
Hike to the Top of the Falls A 45–60 minute trail to the top of Murchison Falls, often combined with a game drive or boat safari for a longer day out.
Hot Air Balloon Safari, Bird Watching, and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Murchison Falls has over 450 bird species. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, en route to the park, offers guided walks to track Uganda’s only wild white rhinos.
