6-Day Uganda Gorilla Trek & Walking Safari Adventure
Overview
This 6-day itinerary is for travellers who want Bwindi as an experience rather than just a permit stop. The structure is built around two specific things: one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in the Nkuringo sector, and a full-day guided walk across the forest from south (Nkuringo) to north (Buhoma) on one of the oldest human trails in East Africa. Together they give a depth of forest engagement that no standard game-drive-and-gorilla-trek itinerary delivers.
The routing uses domestic flights at both ends — Entebbe to Kisoro on Day 2, Kihihi to Entebbe on Day 6 — replacing what would otherwise be a 9–10 hour overland drive from Kampala. The Lake Mutanda canoe crossing and community walking safari between Kisoro and Nkuringo on Day 2 is a genuinely distinctive arrival experience: terraced hillside gardens, crater lake water, and the Bwindi hills coming into view ahead.
Three nights at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge — on the forest edge with panoramic Virunga and Kigezi views — gives the Nkuringo sector proper time: the gorilla trek on Day 3, a free day on Day 4 for optional activities, and the early start on Day 5 for the forest walk. The walk ends at the Buhoma sector where Mahogany Springs Lodge provides the single night before the Kihihi flight on Day 6.
It suits active independent travellers, hiking enthusiasts, and anyone who wants the gorilla experience set within a genuine forest adventure rather than a quick day trip.
Key Information:
- Duration: 6 days

The Bwindi forest walk is what makes this trip different from every other gorilla itinerary. You're inside the forest for a full day, not arriving by vehicle to trek for a few hours. By the time you reach Buhoma you've actually experienced the forest — not just visited it.

General Information
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 331 km² of ancient montane rainforest in southwestern Uganda. The park name comes from the dense, almost impenetrable undergrowth of its primary forest — an ecosystem that has been continuously forested for over 25,000 years, through periods of climatic change that transformed surrounding landscapes. This continuity has produced extraordinary biodiversity: over 120 mammal species, 350+ bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, and half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.
The park has four gorilla trekking sectors — Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Rushaga (south), and Nkuringo (south) — each habituating separate gorilla families and accessed from different trailheads. The Nkuringo sector sits on Bwindi’s southern boundary at high altitude, offering some of the park’s most dramatic scenery and the steepest, most challenging terrain. Buhoma, in the north, is the oldest and most established sector, sitting at the park’s most visited entrance.
The cross-forest trail connecting these two sectors — the Kashasha or Ivy River trail — has been used by local communities for generations as a trade route between the northern and southern Kigezi highlands. It remains one of the most immersive forest walking experiences available in East Africa.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 6-day itinerary is tightly structured — every day has a clear purpose. Day 1 is Entebbe arrival and orientation. Day 2 is the scenic arrival at Nkuringo via canoe and community walk. Day 3 is the gorilla trek. Day 4 is a free day at the lodge. Day 5 is the full-day forest walk to Buhoma. Day 6 is the return flight. Nothing is padded.
The free Day 4 is deliberate — it provides recovery after the gorilla trek and preparation for the more demanding forest walk on Day 5, while offering genuine optional activities (Batwa cultural trail, second gorilla trek, sundowner picnic) rather than filler. The forest walk itself is the itinerary’s physical peak — a full day on forest trail with elevation changes, river crossings, and a lunch stop in the forest before arriving at Buhoma in the afternoon.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
This is a physically demanding itinerary rated as physical. The gorilla trek (Day 3) involves variable-duration hiking on steep, dense forest terrain — typically two to five hours in the Nkuringo sector. The cross-forest walk (Day 5) is four to six hours on forest trail with river crossings and elevation change. Both days require good stamina and comfort with extended walking in humid, sometimes steep conditions. The community walk and canoe crossing on Day 2 are easy by comparison. Porter hire is available on the gorilla trek day and strongly recommended.
Both trails cross Bwindi from Nkuringo to Buhoma, but via different routes. The Kashasha Trail starts from the lodge itself and follows the Kashasha River for part of the route. The Ivy River Trail starts from Nteko village (a short drive from the lodge) and follows the Ivy River through a different section of the forest. The Ivy River Trail is slightly longer. Your guide will advise on trail conditions and recommend which to use based on recent weather and trail state.
The forest walk is not a primate trek — encounters are opportunistic rather than guided to a specific animal. Chimpanzees are frequently heard calling in the forest and are sometimes seen. Forest elephants are present though rarely seen. Black-and-white colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys are commonly encountered. Buffalo and giant forest hogs are possible. The bird list is excellent along the trail — Albertine Rift endemics including the green broadbill, African green broadbill, and blue-headed sunbird are regularly recorded. Two armed rangers accompany all groups.
Yes — both are included in the stated price of USD 3,354 pp. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge covers three nights (Days 2–4) and Mahogany Springs Lodge covers one night (Day 5). Both are mid-range to upper mid-range properties.
Yes. The most natural extension adds golden monkey trekking at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park before or after Bwindi — a one or two-day addition based at Gahinga Lodge in Kisoro (covered in the separate 7-Day Gorillas & Golden Monkey itinerary). Lake Bunyonyi, near Kisoro, is also a natural rest day extension between Bwindi and the return flight.
Yes — one gorilla trekking permit ($800) is included in the quoted price. A second permit for Day 4 can be arranged at additional cost subject to availability. The Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500, Rushaga sector) is also available as an alternative to the standard permit but requires a separate sector arrangement and advance booking.
