5-Day Uganda Gorilla Safari — By Road
Overview
This 5-day itinerary is the overland version of the short Uganda gorilla safari — the same destination and lodge as the fly-in trip, reached by road rather than domestic aircraft. The choice between the two comes down to two things: budget and preference. The road gives you the landscape of southwestern Uganda — the equatorial savannah, the Kigezi highlands, the terraced hill country approaching Kisoro — as a proper part of the trip. Travellers who enjoy the scenery of overland driving and have no particular objection to a nine-hour drive will find it a rewarding two days of country travel. Travellers who prefer to minimise transit time in favour of Bwindi time should compare this against the 5-Day Short Luxury Uganda Gorilla Safari — Fly-in.
The three Bwindi nights are structured identically to the fly-in version — the gorilla trek on Day 3 and a free day on Day 4 with the same menu of optional activities: Batwa cultural trail, Lake Mutanda canoe, second gorilla trek, circular forest trail, or sundowner picnic.
Key Information:
- Duration: 5 days (4 nights)
- Departure Location: Entebbe International Airport
- Trip Type: Tailor-made / Physical
- Price: USD 3,992 pp (2 people)

The road trip is part of the experience. The Kigezi hills in the afternoon light, the last stretch to the lodge through the terraced countryside — it sets you up for the forest in a way that a flight doesn't. If you have the time and enjoy the journey as much as the destination, choose the road.
Highlights
- Optional shoebill tracking at Mabamba Wetland on Day 1
- Scenic road drive through central Uganda — Mpambire drum-making, Equator crossing, Kigezi highlands
- Three nights at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge — forest-edge luxury, Virunga panorama
- Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector
- Free Day 4 — Batwa trail, Lake Mutanda canoe, second gorilla permit, circular forest walk, or lodge day
- Return road through the Kigezi highlands to Entebbe
General Information
The Entebbe–Bwindi road journey passes through three distinct landscape zones. The central Ugandan savannah between Entebbe and Mbarara is a wide, rolling agricultural landscape — cattle farms, banana plantations, and the distinctive red laterite roads. Between Mbarara and Kabale, the land rises into the Kigezi highlands — Rwanda’s border visible in the intensely terraced hillsides and the similarity of the landscape to the country to the south. From Kabale, the final approach through Kisoro and the 32 km dirt road to the lodge passes through some of the most visually dramatic rural landscape in Uganda, with the Virunga volcanoes appearing on the southern horizon.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects approximately half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas across four trekking sectors. The Nkuringo sector is on Bwindi’s southern boundary, at altitude, with the full chain of Virunga volcanoes visible from the lodge ridge.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 5-day overland itinerary accepts the road transfer as a deliberate part of the experience. Day 2 is a nine-hour drive — long but consistently scenic, and broken naturally by the Mpambire stop, the Equator photo, and a lunch stop en route. Day 5 is the return drive. The three middle days at Nkuringo are identical in structure to the fly-in version.
The permit value of USD 745 pp covers the gorilla trekking permit ($800) and associated park fees — the total is consistent with the price breakdown across other Nkuringo itineraries at this sector.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
The sole structural difference is Day 2 and Day 5. This itinerary uses a nine-hour overland drive each way between Entebbe and Bwindi; the 5-Day Short Luxury Uganda Gorilla Safari uses domestic flights (one hour each way). The lodge, gorilla trek, and all activities at Bwindi are identical. The fly-in version gives two additional useful hours at Bwindi in exchange for the flight cost — but the overland drive gives the southwestern Uganda landscape as an experience in its own right.
The overland price (USD 3,992 pp) is slightly higher than the fly-in (USD 3,733 pp) despite not including a flight. This reflects the longer guide and driver hours on the two road days (approximately 18 hours of driving total versus two one-hour flights) and associated fuel and vehicle costs over a much greater distance. The fly-in version is both faster and marginally less expensive.
Yes — the drive is in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with an experienced driver-guide, on a surfaced road for the majority of the route. The last 32 km to the lodge is on a well-maintained dirt road. En route stops (Mpambire, Equator) break the journey naturally. Most travellers find the Kigezi highland scenery sufficiently engaging to make the drive enjoyable. Starting at 6:30 am ensures arrival at the lodge in the late afternoon rather than after dark.
The gorilla trek (Day 3) is the most demanding element — variable duration on steep, dense Nkuringo forest terrain, typically two to five hours. The road drives on Days 2 and 5 are passive. Optional activities on Day 4 range from gentle (sundowner picnic, lodge) to moderate (Batwa trail, Lake Mutanda walk). Porter hire on the gorilla trek day is strongly recommended.
Yes — adding an afternoon game drive at Lake Mburo between Entebbe and Bwindi breaks the Day 2 drive into two shorter days and adds Uganda’s first savannah wildlife day. This converts the trip into a 6-day itinerary with a Lake Mburo overnight. Discuss at the planning stage; the team can requote with this addition.
Yes. The most natural extension from Bwindi is adding Queen Elizabeth National Park on the return — two or three nights at Katara Lodge covering the Kasenyi game drives, the Kazinga Channel boat safari, and the Ishasha tree-climbing lions before continuing to Entebbe. This extends the trip to 7–9 days and converts it from a gorilla-only trip to the classic Uganda wildlife circuit.
