5-Day Short Luxury Uganda Gorilla Safari — Fly-In
Overview
This 5-day itinerary is built for one specific traveller: someone who wants the Uganda mountain gorilla experience but cannot commit to a 7–10 day trip. The domestic flights at each end — Entebbe to Kisoro and Kisoro back to Entebbe — replace the nine to ten-hour overland drive that would otherwise consume two of the five days entirely. The result is a trip that uses all of its available time purposefully: one night in Entebbe, three nights at one of Uganda’s finest forest-edge lodges, and the return flight on Day 5.
The three Bwindi nights are structured around three distinct experiences. Day 2 arrives via Kisoro with an afternoon Batwa cultural trail or the community walk and Lake Mutanda canoe crossing. Day 3 is the gorilla trek in Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector. Day 4 is a free day with a full menu of optional activities — second gorilla permit, Lake Mutanda canoe, sundowner picnic, or relaxed lodge time. The range of Day 4 options turns what could be a one-activity trip into a genuinely varied short break.
At USD 3,733 pp (based on two people), this is one of the most accessible entry-points into the luxury Uganda gorilla safari market — comparable in cost to the standard mid-range versions of the same circuit but using Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge and the domestic flights that define the luxury tier.
Key Information:
- Duration: 5 days (4 nights)
- Departure Location: Entebbe International Airport
- Trip Type: Tailor-made / Physical
- Price: USD 3,733 pp (2 people)

Five days is enough for the gorilla experience if you use the flights. The lodge is one of the best in Uganda, the views are extraordinary, and the Batwa trail the day you arrive means you come to the gorilla briefing the next morning already connected to the forest. It all works.
Highlights
- Domestic flights Entebbe–Kisoro and Kisoro–Entebbe — over southwestern Uganda’s Kigezi highlands
- Optional shoebill tracking at Mabamba Wetland on Day 1
- Batwa cultural trail or Lake Mutanda community walk and canoe crossing on arrival (Day 2)
- Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — one hour with a habituated family
- Three nights at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge — forest-edge, Virunga panorama, luxury cottages
- Free Day 4 with five genuine optional activities
General Information:
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects approximately half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population across four trekking sectors. The Nkuringo sector, on Bwindi’s southern boundary, is where this itinerary is based. It sits at high altitude on a forested ridge above the Kigezi highlands, with the full chain of Virunga volcanoes visible on the southern horizon and the forest canopy of Bwindi Impenetrable below.
Kisoro is the nearest town — a small, scenically dramatic settlement at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes near the Uganda–Rwanda–DRC tri-border area. Lake Mutanda lies between Kisoro and the lodge, its island-dotted crater lake reflecting the Virunga chain on still mornings. The community walking safari from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda, offered on Day 2, passes through terraced Kigezi hillside farmland and is one of the most distinctive rural landscape experiences in southwestern Uganda.
The domestic flight between Entebbe and Kisoro takes approximately one hour each way, passing over the Albertine Rift and the southwestern highlands.

Detailed
Itinerary
This 5-day itinerary is structured for minimal waste — every element has a purpose. Day 1 is arrival and orientation. Day 2 is the flight and a culturally substantive afternoon. Day 3 is the gorilla trek. Day 4 is a genuine free day. Day 5 is the return flight. The three Bwindi nights mean no destination feels rushed, and the two domestic flights mean no day is consumed by a long overland drive.
The Day 2 afternoon options — Batwa cultural trail vs. Lake Mutanda community walk and canoe — are genuinely different experiences. The Batwa trail arrives at the lodge from the direction of the forest; the Lake Mutanda canoe arrives from the direction of the lake. Either works as a distinctive introduction to the Nkuringo area that enriches the gorilla trek the following morning.

What Our Travellers Say

Some of Our
Frequently Asked Questions
The overland distance from Entebbe to the Nkuringo area is approximately 480 km on roads that include significant highland sections — the drive takes nine to ten hours. On a five-day trip, two of those days would be entirely consumed by driving with nothing to show for them. The domestic flights (one hour each way) replace those drives with actual Bwindi time. This is the single most important feature of this itinerary.
The price covers: accommodation at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge (luxury) and one Entebbe hotel night, all full board meals from Day 2 onward, the gorilla trekking permit ($800), both domestic flights (Entebbe–Kisoro and Kisoro–Entebbe), all ground transport, a professional guide throughout, AMREF evacuation cover, and government taxes. It does not include international flights, travel insurance, visa fees, porter hire, or Day 5 accommodation in Entebbe.
The gorilla trek (Day 3) is the most physically demanding element — variable duration on steep, dense Nkuringo forest terrain, typically two to five hours. Moderate fitness is sufficient. The Day 2 Lake Mutanda community walk option involves four to five hours of walking on rural hillside paths — moderate effort. The Batwa trail is gentle. Porter hire on the gorilla trek day is strongly recommended.
Yes. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is the alternative luxury option at Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector — smaller, more exclusive, and at a higher price point. Discuss the lodge preference with the team at planning.
Yes — a second standard gorilla trekking permit can be arranged for Day 4 at additional cost, subject to permit availability at the Nkuringo sector. Pre-book well in advance. The Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500, Rushaga sector, four hours with a semi-habituated family) is also an option with advance planning and a separate sector arrangement.
Yes, easily. One or two additional nights at Bwindi adds space for both the Batwa trail and the Lake Mutanda canoe without having to choose between them. Golden monkey trekking at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be added for one or two nights at Gahinga Lodge in Kisoro — covered in the 7-Day Gorillas & Golden Monkey itinerary.
