Rwakobo Rock Lodge is a wilderness retreat on the northern edge of Lake Mburo National Park, set on a massive granite outcrop in the Ankole ranchlands.
The lodge is just over a kilometre from the Nshara Gate, with thatched cottages tucked around the rock and a waterhole below the main building that draws zebra, warthog, impala, and bushbuck in the late afternoons. Buffalo and eland roam the surrounding plains.
It’s an unfussy, well-priced alternative to the more luxurious lodges in the park — a good fit for travellers who want a relaxed wilderness stay without paying top-tier rates.
Best for: Families, couples, and groups wanting a mid-range Lake Mburo lodge with a strong sense of place. Particularly suitable for travellers self-driving or stopping en route between Kampala and Bwindi.
Accommodation at Rwakobo Rock
The lodge offers three styles of accommodation across the property:
African-styled Cottages (×9) Thatched private cottages set around the granite outcrop, each with solar lighting, en-suite bathrooms, and a private veranda. Positioned to take advantage of rocky ledges and secluded corners.
Hornbill House A five-bedroom shared house. Each room is en-suite with its own veranda — ideal for families or groups travelling together.
Classic Safari Tents (×3) En-suite canvas tents with a maximum of two guests per tent, for travellers wanting a more traditional bush feel.
The lodge runs on solar energy and rainwater harvesting, designed to tread lightly on the surrounding Lake Mburo ecosystem.

Dining at Rwakobo
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the main lodge building above the waterhole. Menus rotate between continental, Italian, and Indian dishes, with buffet-style dinners. Early breakfasts and packed lunches are available for guests heading out at first light.
Families and Children
Rwakobo is well set up for families. Hornbill House works as a shared family base, and children aged 5–12 are charged $40 per night. Childcare activities are available so parents can join game drives and walks.
Activities at Rwakobo Rock
Lake Mburo is one of the few Ugandan parks offering night game drives and walking safaris, which gives Rwakobo a strong activity range despite its budget-friendly pricing.
Game Drives — Day and Night Lake Mburo doesn’t have lion or elephant, but offers strong sightings of zebra, eland, impala, topi, waterbuck, buffalo, and warthog. Night drives improve the chances of spotting leopards, spotted hyenas, bush pigs, genet cats, and white-tailed mongoose.
Nature Walks Two-hour guided loops with an armed UWA ranger, including a swamp walk with raised platforms — possible sightings of sitatunga and Uganda’s elusive shoebill stork. See more on walking safaris in Uganda.
Biking Safari Hire a bike and explore the sandy tracks outside the park. Trails range from gentle family routes to harder rides over termite mounds and animal paths.
Boat Safaris Boat trips on Lake Mburo run every couple of hours through the day, with the last departure at 5:30 pm. Hippos, crocodiles, and water birds are reliable sightings.
Ankole Cultural Experience A visit to a local Bahima family living near the lodge — milking Ankole long-horned cows, ghee-making, and listening to traditional folklore. See more on cultural safari tours in East Africa.
How to Get There
Rwakobo Rock is reached via the Nshara Gate access road off the Mbarara–Masaka highway.
- From Kampala — drive past Lyantonde (around 20 km) to the 50 km marker for Mbarara. Look for the blue milk factory at Akageti Trading Center, then turn south. It’s about 8 km to the Nshara Gate, and a further 1.5 km on dirt road to the lodge.
- From south-western Uganda or after gorilla trekking in Bwindi — turn south at Akageti Trading Center, 53 km from Mbarara City.
The drive from Kampala takes 4–5 hours. The access road is unpaved and can be rough in the wet season — a 4×4 is recommended. Allow around 25 minutes between the highway and the lodge.
