Gorilla Trekking vs. Gorilla Habituation Experience

For those seeking an intimate encounter with these remarkable animals, Uganda Wildlife Authority offers two popular options: gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation. While both experiences provide unique insights into the lives of these endangered creatures, they present distinct approaches and experiences. Let's explore these differences.

What is the difference between gorilla trekking and habituation experience?

Gorilla trekking is a shorter, more common experience where visitors hike through the forest to observe a habituated gorilla family for one hour. The goal is to minimize human interference while allowing visitors to see the gorillas in their natural habitat.

Gorilla habituation, on the other hand, is a longer, more immersive experience where visitors spend four hours with a gorilla group that is not yet fully used to human presence. This provides a unique opportunity to witness the habituation process and learn about gorilla behavior and social dynamics in greater depth.

The main differences between gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation experiences are:

  1. Participation and Immersion:
    • Gorilla Trekking: Involves observing and photographing gorillas from a designated distance (typically 10 meters or 32 feet) for a brief period (usually one hour). Participants act primarily as observers and photographers.
    • Gorilla Habituation Experience: Allows participants to actively participate in the habituation process, spending more time with the gorillas (up to four hours), and engaging in a more immersive and participatory encounter.
  2. Time and Duration:
    • Gorilla Trekking: Typically lasts for a few hours, including the trek to and from the gorilla family‘s location, with only one hour spent observing the gorillas.
    • Gorilla Habituation Experience: Requires a longer commitment, typically lasting more than four hours, including the trek and the time spent observing the gorillas.
  3. Group Size:
    • Gorilla Trekking: Allows for a group of up to eight tourists per gorilla family.
    • Gorilla Habituation Experience: Limits the group to a maximum of four tourists per gorilla family, ensuring a more intimate and personalized encounter.
  4. Cost:
    • Gorilla Trekking: The cost of a gorilla trekking permit varies by country and residency, (Foreign non-residents pay $800 in Uganda and $1500 in Rwanda) but is generally lower than the habituation experience.
    • Gorilla Habituation Experience: The cost is significantly higher, with permits ranging from $1,500 to $1,000 for foreign residents and UGX750,000 for East African citizens.

  1. Physical Demands:
    • Gorilla Trekking: Requires physical stamina for the trek to and from the gorilla family’s location, which can be challenging.
    • Gorilla Habituation Experience: Also requires physical stamina, as participants need to trek for extended periods and navigate challenging terrain.
  2. Purpose:
    • Gorilla Trekking: Primarily focuses on observing and photographing gorillas in their natural habitat, with a shorter duration and less immersive experience.
    • Gorilla Habituation Experience: Involves a more comprehensive and participatory experience, allowing participants to spend more time with the gorillas and engage in a deeper understanding of their behavior and dynamics.

Choosing the right experience

  • Choose gorilla trekking if: you prefer a shorter, more physically challenging experience; you are content with limited interaction time with gorillas; you are excited by the adventure of tracking gorilla families through dense forests.
  • Choose gorilla habituation experience if: you seek a deeper understanding of gorilla behavior and society; you want a more intimate and extended experience; you are physically fit to trek in the jungle for several hours; you want to contribute to gorilla conservation efforts.

Both experiences offer unique opportunities to observe and appreciate these magnificent creatures while supporting their conservation. The choice ultimately depends on individual preferences, time constraints, and budget.

What Our Travellers Say

My son and I spent two weeks experiencing African magic with Nkuringo Safaris, and we will never forget our time there. Truly a priceless experience. I could talk about those experiences for pages — the friendly people, the beautiful Nile River where we did whitewater rafting, the tree lions, the chimpanzees, and the majestic mountain gorillas.

Steven Susser

In November 2020, we travelled to Uganda as a couple in a 4×4 Safari Jeep. Considering the difficult time we are all in, we were especially happy about the level of service we experienced. You can travel to Uganda with no problem. During our travel, we felt safer than in Europe – everybody cared about our health and happiness.

Sarah B

Don’t miss out on this unique experience. Our guide, Richard, was excellent. We had an informative and unique walk down the mountain from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda. We walked through villages and saw families actively working their farms. The walk is easy. The dugout canoe was very comfortable, with padded seats. We highly recommend the adventure.

My husband and I had a week’s vacation, which is not a lot given everything we wanted to do/see. Nkuringo organized our trip to make the most of this week. The trip was flawlessly organized. Time management was perfect. They were flexible and accommodating, all our needs were met, and we felt listened to; it was a truly customized experience.

Victoria V

The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely… hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night made it such a special place.

Travelling Uganda as a couple… our guide knew so much about animals, plants and the country’s history. He was funny and friendly and looked after us incredibly well.

Tom R, USA

We are a travel company ourselves and this company over-delivered for us… The whole thing ran like clockwork, even while making sure everyone was happy with the amount of time spent in each place.
